Acne at Pure Dermatology

At Pure Dermatology, we evaluate and treat acne patients every day. As a long-time acne patient herself, Dr. Holcomb understands how distressful acne can be. Dr. Holcomb is a board-certified dermatologist who not only practices, but lectures on acne treatments. Dr. Haseltine, board-certified dermatologist, has also practiced treating acne for over 15 years. Cherie Albro, certified family nurse practitioner, has a passion for treating acne and rounds out our team of providers. All members of our team help each patient choose the treatment that is right for them.
Scarring is a great concern for many with acne problems. Pure Dermatology offers a multitude of treatments to mitigate acne scars. The providers at Pure Dermatology believe that personalized skincare is a requirement when properly treating acne. Acne can be caused by a variety of reasons:

Treatment Options for Acne and Acne Scarring

Medical grade topical treatments are critical to prevent and treat scarring and discoloration from acne. We offer and help select medical grade cosmeceuticals specific to your skin needs like Pure Confidence 5% Benzoyl Peroxide Wash, Pure Confidence 2% Salicylic Acid Wash, EltaMD UV Clear broad-spectrum SPF 46, Avène Clean-Ac Soothing Cleansing Cream, various alpha, beta, and poly hydroxy acids and exfoliants. Pure Dermatology carries distinguished product lines such as skinbetter science, SkinMedica, and Revision Skincare, which all have great sunscreens for acne-prone patients.

At Pure Dermatology, we offer several peels that are safe and effective for acne and hyperpigmentation in all skin types. These gentle procedures help to unclog pores, reduce oil production, and help redness and pigmentation. Peels help with active breakouts, prevention of new acne, and treatment of scars. As board-certified dermatologists, Dr. Haseltine and Dr. Holcomb select peels that are unique to your skin type and need. Superficial peels often cause minimal dryness to a few days of peeling. A series of 5-6 acne treatments are recommended, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The cost of superficial peels starts at $150 each and we also have special package pricing for Pure Dermatology Patients.

This pain-free treatment reduces the inflammation from acne as well as the appearance of superficial, deep, and red acne scars. Laser genesis is also safe in pregnancy. This restorative treatment is often administered as 5 total treatments done every 2-4 weeks. Treatment costs $275 per treatment or we offer packages of 5 and 10 with discounted pricing.

OxyGeneo 3-in-1 Super Facial gently bubbles away damaged skin cells and helps improve cell stimulation. This action can unclog pores, help control oil, prevent formation of new acne, and prime the skin for topical treatments. OxyGeneo also oxygenates and infuses nutrients into the skin, revitalizing a dull complexion. This treatment has no downtime and is a fantastic acne treatment in New Orleans.

Excel V is a cousin of laser genesis and can treat active acne as well as more severe red scarring. The settings used for Excel V are unique and customizable and Excel V does not disrupt the skin barrier meaning you can return to normal activities immediately after. However, there can be swelling for a few days with the setting used for acne scarring. Excel V treatments vary from 2-5 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart and cost $150-$525 per treatment depending the size of the area treated.

Excel V also treats the following skin concerns:

  • Rosacea
  • Diffuse redness (red face)
  • Bruising seen after fillers, surgery, or injury
  • Scars
  • Poikiloderma (sun damage)
  • Blue veins under or around eyes
  • Broken blood vessels (Telangiectasias)
  • Acne scarring
  • Large pores
  • Melasma (in specific cases)
  • Pigmented brown lesions or brown spots
  • Folliculitis or hair bumps
  • Laser hair removal in dark skin types
  • Spider veins
  • Stretch marks (early red color)
  • Leg Veins
  • Cherry angiomas (hemangiomas)

Often mistaken for acne, folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicle from plucking, shaving, or from thick hairs. This condition, sometimes referred to as PFB (pseudofolliculitis barbae) can be cured completely with laser hair reduction. Pure Dermatology offers safe and effective laser hair reduction for all skin types and colors. Dr. Haseltine and Holcomb have considerable experience choosing laser settings that are best for each skin type and for maximum effect. Treatment costs range from $75-$750 per treatment depending on the area treated.

We perform both blue light or BLU-U and red light or BF-RhodoLED. This treatment does not use photosensitizer, is painless, and drug-FREE. It is safe in pregnancy as well. These can be used to target acne and excess oil production, redness, inflammation, and scarring. It involves a 20-minute procedure that is repeated 2 times per week for 6 weeks. This treatment can also be combined with a “photo-sensitizing” agent like Ameluz, which will prolong downtime, but enhance and hasten results. And is then called photodynamic therapy (PDT), performed 2 times spaced by 4-6 weeks.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been shown to improve acne due to its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits. PDT offers improvement in redness, inflammation, and scarring and can reduce the amount of oil production often associated with acne. The use of PDT in the treatment of acne is safe, effective, and has no or minimal complications. PDT is used in combination with your individualized prescription regimen and skincare routine to optimize the best results. We recommend 2 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart with the “photo-sensitizing” agent, Ameluz, to maximize results of PDT. This treatment is solely directed and conducted by our board-certified dermatologists, Dr. Holcomb or Dr. Haseltine or by nurse practitioner, Cherie Albro. We also perform both blue light or BLU-U and red light or BF-RhodoLED.

aka Secret RF, this type of microneedling has the added benefit of radiofrequency (RF) transmitted as heat into the deep layers of skin resulting in further collagen stimulation and skin tightening. The addition of heat also seals up the blood vessels resulting in even less downtime than conventional microneedling. Secret RF improves the overall tone and texture of the skin, treating acne scars and causing large pores and redness to look less prominent. Compared with laser procedures for acne scarring, microneedling RF does not typically worsen or flare acne and seems to have modest benefit on active acne. Most patients need 4-6 treatments spaced 4-12 weeks apart and 1-2 maintenance treatments per year.

Secret RF also treats the following skin concerns:

  • Acne scars
  • Dull complexion
  • Sun damaged skin or premature aging
  • Scars from injury or surgery
  • Skin revitalization or adding luminosity to the skin
  • Overall skin rejuvenation
  • Stretch marks also known as striae
  • Large pores
  • Neck lines (necklace lines)
  • Skin tone and texture
  • Fine lines and moderate wrinkles
  • Blackheads
  • Mild skin laxity
  • Crepey skin of the neck, knees, and upper arms
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
