What is Botox (Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin)?

Neuromodulators, also known as neurotoxins, relax overactive muscles in the face and neck. Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin work by blocking the communication between the nerve endings and the muscle. These injectable medications block muscles from contracting and reduce the repetitive movements that lead to wrinkles. They can also block the communication of the nerve with the sweat glands to help reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Pure Dermatology offers Botox, Dysport and Jeuveau to patients in the New Orleans and Metairie, LA area.  Dr. Holcomb and Dr. Haseltine use these treatments to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin aging.

The effects of Botox, Dysport and Jeuveau injections are temporary and repeat treatments are necessary to soften creases and furrows.

What can be treated with Botox (Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin)?

Botox is a FDA-approved neuromodulator for moderate to severe frown lines between the brows (glabellar lines, 11’s), crows feet, forehead lines, and excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis). Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin are all neuromodulators that were created after Botox. Due to this, they don’t have as many FDA-approved indications but most experts use them similarly to Botox. All of the aforementioned products are used to treat and prevent worsening of wrinkles and fine lines as well as “off-label” areas to treat the following concerns:

Most patients have a very minimal amount of swelling at the injection sites for 15-20 minutes.
After the treatment each patient is instructed to be careful when rubbing, pressing, or sleeping on the treatment site 1-2 hours after the injection.

Treatment with all of the neuromodulators (Jeuveau, Dysport, Botox, and Xeomin) used at Pure Dermatology are quick and painless. A very fine needle is used  for injection after the area has been topically numbed. The resulting sensation is similar to a small pinch.

Most patients can see a change in the strength of the muscles or the reduction in lines within 2-3 days; however, the complete outcome is evident by 10-14 days. We like to see the patient back 2 weeks after the first treatment to ensure both the patient and Dr. Holcomb or Dr. Haseltine are satisfied with the outcome.

Most neuromodulators like Jeuveau, Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin last 3-6 months in patients. Duration is determined by dosing, the size and locations of the muscles treated and other factors. Patient satisfaction is high even 5 months after injection with Jeuveau treatment. Using a higher dose results in longer duration for all of the neuromodulators but the trade off can make the injection look frozen.

These expectations and concerns can be assessed by expert injectors like Dr. Holcomb and Dr. Haseltine.

Botox became FDA approved treatment of chronic migraines in 2010. We only treat for cosmetic improvement in our clinic but many patients report improvement in their migraine and bruxism (tooth clenching) symptoms after treatment for cosmetic improvement.

Not at all! If you give up treatment with neuromodulators your face and skin and aging will go back to baseline. Most patients love their Botox injections so much they elect to continue. However, the results seen from an injection are temporary and have the best results when performed by an expert injector.

Treatment areas, downtime, results and longevity are comparable across Jeuveau, Botox and Dysport. There are some small nuances to each product that our team at Pure Dermatology can cover. Most importantly, their safety is the same for all products used at our clinic.

All of the above neuromodulators work in similar fashion however, the results seen from an injection are temporary and have the best results when done in a manner dictated by the physician.
