Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to activate the body’s natural restorative processes to transform blemished and damaged tissue into smoother, clearer, more vibrant skin. Also known as percutaneous collagen induction therapy (PCIT), microneedling is a procedure where tiny sterile needles penetrate the skin in order to create superficial injuries that stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, and other growth factors in response to small areas of injury.

At Pure Dermatology, we use the Eclipse MicroPen Elite to stimulate the tissue and improve the appearance of the skin. It is designed for use by skin care professionals. The procedure is performed in a safe and precise manner utilizing the Turbo Safety Cartridge™, a sterile micro-exfoliation component. The procedure is typically completed in 30-60 minutes, depending on the body site being treated.

This very safe and effective procedure may be used to improve the following skin concerns:

  • Fine lines and moderate wrinkles
  • Sun damaged skin and premature aging
  • Neck lines or necklace lines
  • Pore size reduction
  • Acne scars
  • Scars from injury or surgery
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Stretch marks also known as striae
  • Mild skin laxity
  • Adding luminosity to the skin

The benefits of Eclipse MicroPen are little discomfort and very minimal downtime compared with epidermal abrasion techniques and ablative lasers. There is a lower risk of infection with microneedling because the channels close shortly after the treatment.

We take patient comfort very seriously at Pure Dermatology, so numbing cream is placed before every procedure for 20-30 minutes. The skin is prepped in a sterile manner and a disposable sterile cartridge containing 12 tiny micro-points is attached to the MicroPen. Dr. Holcomb will select the appropriate treatment setting based on your unique needs. Next, a thin layer of sterile topical gel will be applied to your skin and in a single motion, the vibrating pen will be gently pressed against the skin in a uniform pattern. This process results in thousands of superficial microscopic channels throughout the entire treatment area stimulating collagen, elastin, and growth factors.

Treatment time depends on the size of the treatment area and usually takes about 45 minutes-1 hour including the time needed for numbing. We can safely use the MicroPen to enhance the skin on the face, neck, décolletage, back, abdomen, arms, hands and legs.

The MicroPen is designed to be used under a doctor’s supervision in a sterile, safe, precise manner using the disposable Turbo Safety Cartridge. Trying to undertake this procedure on your own carries significant risk of infection, pain, and scar formation.

Downtime depends on the conditions being treated.  A typical treatment usually leaves redness that looks like a scrape for up to 24 hours.  For deeper conditions like scars or deep wrinkles, redness may last for a few days.  You may wear makeup the day after the procedure.

The number of treatments needed depends on the specific concern.  For optimal results, we recommend 2 to 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart.  For maintenance, most patients opt for 1-3 treatments per year.  For deeper problems such as scars, deep wrinkles, or stretch marks, 6-8 sessions may be required. Improvement to the treated area begins at 2-3 weeks and may continue for up to 6 months after the treatment.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) may be combined with microneedling.  Platelet Rich Plasma, made famous by Kim Kardashian as The Vampire FaceLift, contains growth factors that stimulate stem cells within your skin, activating new, healthy tissue. Microneedling creates “injury” to the skin, therefore tricking the body into healing itself while creating direct channels for PRP to be delivered.  Microneedling ensure PRP’s valuable growth factors are penetrated deep into the skin’s dermis. PRP can also be injected into areas of the face, such tear troughs and upper lip lines, producing dramatic results without increasing volume.
