Platelet Rich Plasma at Pure Dermatology

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a procedure that uses your body’s own natural growth factors to stimulate new collagen and hair growth.

Platelets, a natural part of your blood, are vehicles for healing because they contain growth-promoting substances. When an injury occurs, the platelets activate and release these growth factors to heal the wound. Additionally, platelets stimulate tissue recovery and hair-follicle growth.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) refers to processed blood in which red blood cells have been removed, therefore leaving an increased concentration of platelets. PRP has a long history in the treatment of surgical recovery, bone cancer, ulcers, arthritis pain, and torn ligaments. One of the most common indications for PRP is hair loss.

What is the procedure for PRP therapy?

PRP therapy is the process of taking your own blood with a simple blood draw done in our office. The blood is centrifuged (spun rapidly in a specialized machine) to separate the blood components to harvest the platelet rich plasma. After 15 minutes, your own PRP containing hundreds of specialized growth factor proteins is ready to be injected into the scalp or skin to stimulate hair growth and collagen production.

How can I prepare for PRP therapy?

It is important for you to be well-hydrated leading up to your appointment – drink lots of water and drink minimal caffeine! It is best to book your appointment in the afternoon so you have time to hydrate.  Staying well hydrated will make the processing of the initial blood draw more successful.  Avoid smoking and the consumption of alcohol before your treatment date. We will also review your medical conditions and list of medications prior to your appointment to ensure this procedure is right for you.

What areas can be treated with PRP?

At Pure Dermatology, PRP is used for restoring hair growth and improving skin elasticity and firmness for a healthier and more vibrant appearance. The activated platelets stimulate skin rejuvenation or new hair growth if injected into the scalp in and around the injection sites.

For hair loss, the PRP is injected into your scalp with a small needle to restore blood flow to hair follicles and promote new growth. PRP can also be injected into eyebrows to stimulate hair growth. The growth factors help to create or stimulate new hair follicles. PRP injections are an effective and safe addition to most hair loss treatment plans. Dr. Haseltine and Dr. Holcomb will discuss this as an additive treatment at your hair loss consult if it is appropriate for your skin concerns!

PRP can also be used as injectable facial filler to refresh skin. This is a low-risk treatment for that hard-to-treat under eye area and is a great add-on to other skin procedures. Additionally, microneedling followed by application of PRP has been shown to have an increase in multiple types of collagen. This treatment became popular several years ago and is known as the “vampire facial.”  The increase in collagen makes skin more refreshed and has been shown to decrease the appearance of acne, fine lines, wrinkles, or pigmented areas.

What can I expect from PRP treatment?

The expected result depends on which treatment you receive. Both hair loss and aging are ongoing and chronic – the clock is always ticking. Your result will depend on your own body’s ability to repair itself and reawaken your sleeping stem cells. For hair, we feel treatment is best combined with prescription medication and medical grade topical treatments.  For skin anti-aging, PRP is most effective when combined with a comprehensive treatment plan, but results continue from PRP for 2-3 months after injection or application. All treatments show gradual and cumulative improvement.

Is PRP therapy safe?

Injections carry little side effect or risk since this process involves your own blood with no other additives or medications. The most common side effect is a bruise in the site of injection. Sometimes the skin can have a yellow-pink discoloration for a few days post-injection.

Does PRP therapy hurt?

At Pure Dermatology, we take pride in providing the best quality treatments to our patients with minimal discomfort involving the least necessary downtime. Each patient has topical numbing applied before their procedure, and we use additional comfort techniques and strategies to ensure discomfort is minimal.  Most PRP injections have no discomfort afterwards.

How long does PRP last?

It usually takes about 6 weeks for initial results to appear after PRP injection, and results continue to improve for about 2-3 months after injection. Most results will last about 1 year after last injection.

Can I recieve PRP and Botox injections at the same time?

Absolutely. Because each product works differently in the skin, the two can be a powerful combination to achieve beautiful, natural-looking rejuvenation.

How much does PRP cost?

For hair loss: We generally perform PRP injections monthly for 3 months and then once every 3 months thereafter. The cost is normally $500 per treatment session.  The average patient requires several treatments to see results.  We encourage patients to commit to a year of treatment initially, as results are gradual and cumulative.  In order to optimize results, we offer a year pre-purchase of PRP treatments, which offers a $500 dollar discount.

For collagen stimulation and growth: The cost ranges from $300-$1500 depending on the amount of blood drawn and the complexity of the treatment.
