Profound Cellulite Reduction | Pure Dermatology

By: Dr. Kate Holcomb and Dr. Mara Haseltine, Pure Dermatology

We have already been using Profound to tighten skin and increase elasticity of the Jowls and neck, but did you know we can also use Profound Body to help in cellulite reduction? It helps destroy small pockets of unwanted fat, and stimulate collagen.

And while we have been using Sculptra, the injectable biostimulator for creating collagen, Profound Body combines microneedling with radiofrequency to treat stubborn cellulite and reduce pockets of unwanted fat. All of these treatments take time to work, but the benefit of Profound Body is that it is considered a one-and-done single in-office treatment.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a result of the complex interplay between fat cells, thickness of the skin, and fibrous septae or bands found in the dermis (the second and thickest layer of skin). The dimpling of cellulite is caused by bands of collagen, or septae, that tether the skin to the muscle. This multi-factorial condition causes irregularity in the appearance of the surface of the skin often referred to as “cottage cheese” or “orange peel.” Basically, the ultimate buzzkill.

The hallmark of cellulite is lumps or waviness from fat that is trapped by these fibrous septae, which pull the skin downwards causing the “dimpling” and loss of a smooth butt or thighs.

Cellulite is mostly a disease of women, as 9 out of 10 women suffer from cellulite. We most commonly use Profound Body to treat the cellulite of the thighs, but other common trouble spots where we like to use Profound Body are the following:

  • Small targeted areas of the abdomen, particularly in women in their 30’s and 40’s
  • The sides of the hips aka saddlebags
  • Bra fat – both front and back
  • Banana roll – that little swelling of fat you detest right below the buttocks.

What causes cellulite?

The exact cause of cellulite is unknown. Diet and lifestyle may have an impact on cellulite, however, even those who maintain a strict diet and exercise routine can still suffer from it. Cellulite has no direct correlation to body fat percentage, but rather the structure of the fat under the skin.

Genetics play a major role in whether or not you have cellulite.  Thanks mom! Therefore you may suffer from stubborn cellulite even if you lose weight, eat healthy or exercise regularly.

Is there a treatment for cellulite reduction?

Because cellulite is actually trapped fat and the fibrous septae do not change with diet or exercise, it is very difficult to correct the appearance of cellulite on your own.

Anti-cellulite creams, like any body moisturizer, can improve the look of the skin by plumping it up temporarily, but no topical skincare can remove or prevent cellulite. It occurs too deeply below the skin’s surface.

Fortunately, there are now non-invasive treatments that can be performed in the office for cellulite reduction. While no treatment can “get rid” of cellulite, Profound Body can help smooth areas of the body prone to cellulite.

What is the Profound® Treatment?

The Profound® Treatment is an FDA approved, non-surgical in-office treatment that treats the dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin. It is the first device with temperature-controlled radiofrequency clinically and scientifically proven to treat cellulite. Clinical studies showed that 94% of patients treated with Profound Body had improvement in their cellulite.

How does Profound Body work?

Profound combines radiofrequency energy with a microneedling delivery system to the deeper layers of the skin in a very precise and targeted way.

Profound Body Q&A:

Q:  What can I expect from the Profound Body treatment?

A: Profound is a single in-office treatment with results that last about 3 years. There is no surgery and no general anesthesia. It is considered a one-and-done for cellulite and small pockets of fat. The procedure takes about 3 hours in office but may take a little longer depending on the area treated.

There is not much downtime with Profound Body, but you are a little bit swollen after for about 7-10 days. Typically, the areas are covered by clothing and there may be some bruising from the numbing sticks. You may not want to be in a bathing suit for about 2 weeks but you can go about your normal routine of exercise, work, or whatever else you need to do.

Q: Is the Profound® treatment painful?

A:  No. We use local injectable anesthesia.  We first numb you topically and then after that we use tiny needles to numb the area. This allows our technician to get the proper amount of heat for the treatment to be effective. But it is completely comfortable because you are totally numb.

Q: What makes the Profound Body different from Coolsculpting?

A: Profound works completely differently than Coolsculpting. Profound uses heat energy while Coolsculpting uses cold. Additionally, Profound has been clinically proven to treat cellulite where Coolsculpting does not. However, Profound is not used for large areas of fat, only for targeted areas of unwanted fat.

Q: What makes the Profound Body different from truSculpt?

A: Both Profound and truSculpt iD are radiofrequency. However, truSculpt iD energy is delivered from the surface of the skin and does not require numbing. It is better for pinchable fat in a broader area. Additionally, Profound has been clinically proven for cellulite reduction.

We also offer truSculpt flex which builds muscle. This device is amazing to combine with any body treatment. Profound does not influence or reach the muscle.

Q:  Will Profound help me achieve my summer body?

A:  The ideal candidate for Profound Body is any person in good overall health who has ever hoped for a solution to improve the appearance of cellulite or is holding on to saddle bags or bra fat then Profound Body is right for you.

You need to plan ahead, because optimum results appear at three (3) to six (6) months after Profound® Treatment, and be the extra step you need to get your body looking smooth and youthful.

Ready for Your Glow Up?

Ready for Your Glow Up? Pure Dermatology is excited for the launch of the newest injectable from the makers of Botox. SKINVIVE is coming in September and Dr. Holcomb and Haseltine cannot wait! We were both introduced to SKINVIVE around the time of Hurricane Ida. We were attending a conference together and a Canadian colleague was lecturing. We could not stop remarking how glowing and radiant this woman looked from more than 100 feet away in the lecture hall. We saw her a few times over the course of 2 days and every time we saw her, we were blown
